Time Travel

“The Galapagos Islands are probably the most famous wildlife-watching destination in the world. And no wonder – it’s almost impossible to exaggerate the sheer spectacle of the place that provided inspiration for Charles Darwin’s
ground-breaking theory of natural selection.”
– Mark Carwardine

“The Galapagos Islands provide a window on time. In a geologic sense, the islands are young, yet they appear ancient.”
– Frans Lanting

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be
judged by the way its animals are treated.”
– Mahatma Gandhi

The marine iguana, also known as the Galápagos marine iguana, is a species of iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands. Unique among modern lizards, it is a marine reptile that has the ability to forage in the sea for algae, which makes up almost all of its diet.

“It is not the strongest of species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”
– Charles Darwin

Invasive species, climate change, overfishing, and the impacts of human activity have altered the fabric of Galápagos’ ecosystems. Efforts to restore land and marine habitats by the Galapagos Conservancy and other groups are critical to the long-term health of the Islands.
