A STATEMENT BY STEVE MCCURRY

“I can think of few greater humanitarian
organizations than the EMERGENCY
hospitals in Afghanistan which have
operated continuously throughout the
turbulence of the past few years.
When many fled the country, Emergency
doubled down on their commitment to care
for Afghans as they have since 1999.”

– Steve McCurry

Starting on August 15, we are teaming up with Ishkar to raise funds by selling the print below at a special, one-time price to show Afghanistan that we have not forgotten.
More information coming soon at http://www.ishkar.com

Overcoming: Our Greatest Glory

Although the world is full of suffering,
it is also full of the overcoming of it.

– Helen Keller

 Porbandar, India

Our greatest glory is not in never falling,
but in rising every time we fall.
– Confucius

A man recycles bombshells into flowerpots in Kayan, Afghanistan

Indeed, this life is a test. It is a test of many things –
of our convictions and priorities, our faith and our faithfulness,
our patience and our resilience, and in the end,
our ultimate desires.
– Sheri L. Dew

A good half of the art of living is resilience.

Make-believe conquers the tools of war as children clamber over an abandoned anti-aircraft gun in Beirut, Lebanon, 1982. These tools of war became an improvised playground demonstrating the resilience of children. No matter how dire the situation, how dangerous the environment, children need to play. Whether it is splashing in puddles or climbing on abandoned tanks, their world of make-believe is almost as important as food and shelter.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to succeed is

After the monsoon, this Indonesian woman attempts to rescue her rice plants. With the blackened earth flattened by the retreating floodwaters and trees stripped of their leaves, it is a bleak scene. The woman’s efforts are necessary for the continued subsistence of her family.

Two young boys carry wood to their homes for the family’s cook fire.

In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, to struggle together with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life.

a desire so strong that people who know they will never see me again open themselves to the camera,  all in the hope that at the other end someone will be watching, someone who will laugh or suffer with them.

Sunshine, Food and Medicine

Flowers are sunshine, food and medicine to the mind.
– Luther Burbank, botanist, horticulturist

 Oaxaca, Mexico

Flowers have been an important part of cultures for thousands of years.
People use them to celebrate, mourn, mark special occasions, and
adorn themselves.

When you have only two pennies left in the world,
buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other.

An Afghan version of “beating swords into plowshares …”
This man in Kayan, Baghlan Province, was
making flowerpots from shells intended to kill and maim.

 Kabul, Afghanistan.

Day of the Dead, Mexico

Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men or animals.
Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression;
some are pensive and diffident;

others again are plain, honest and upright, like the
broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock.
– Henry Ward Beecher, Star Papers: A Discourse of Flowers

Oaxaca, MexicoCAMBODIA-10083Angkor Wat, Cambodia

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.
~ Claude Monet

 Zagreb, Croatia

The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him
through the graceful bending of their stems and the
harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms.
Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him.
– Auguste Rodin

Havana, Cuba

ECUADOR-10059

Zagreb, Croatia

Against a dark sky all flowers look like fireworks.
There is something strange about them, at once vivid and secret,
like flowers traced in fire in the phantasmal garden of a witch.
~G.K. Chesterton, Alarms and Discursions

Los Angeles, California

People from a planet without flowers would think
we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.
~Iris Murdoch, A Fairly Honourable Defeat

Rome, Italy
