The Kingdom of Trees

Between heaven and earth, between mankind and the stars, lies the kingdom of trees; between that which gives us food, housing and work on the one hand and that which is incomprehensible
and unaccountable on the other.

Trees in the History of Civilization

Kashmir

Trees are Sentinels
Guarding, Nurturing, Protecting
Bastions of Dignity

Breathing life
Providing shelter
Asking for nothing
Sacrificing everything

-K. Earle

Tahiti
Namibia

Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them,
can learn the truth.
They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach
undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.

-Hermann Hesse, Wandering

Korea
United States

For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary
than a beautiful, strong tree.

-H. Hesse, ibid

Thailand

Trees, proud standing people
stretching fingertips to the sky, reaching, praying
glorious attention, breathing light.
strength shelter timeless confidence
bending and firm comforting …

-Wallace Stevens

Mali
Italy

Planting trees early in spring,
we make a place for birds to sing in time to come.
How do we know? They are singing here now.
There is no other guarantee that
singing will ever be.

-Wendell Berry

Madagascar
Japan

No wonder the hills and groves were
God’s first temples…

-John Muir

Sahel

I hear the wind among the trees
Playing the celestial symphonies;
I see the branches downward bent,
Like keys of some great instrument.

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

India
New Zealand

A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire,
in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a
dancing tongue of flame
to warm the heart.

-Hal Borland

Italy
Ethiopia

I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do. They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!

-John Muir

A STATEMENT BY STEVE MCCURRY

“I can think of few greater humanitarian
organizations than the EMERGENCY
hospitals in Afghanistan which have
operated continuously throughout the
turbulence of the past few years.
When many fled the country, Emergency
doubled down on their commitment to care
for Afghans as they have since 1999.”

Upstairs, Downstairs

Burma

For centuries, stairs have symbolized journeys, rites of passage,
transitions,
and stages of  life in art, literature, and music.

Tibet

My Soul. I summon to the winding ancient stair;
Set all your mind upon the steep ascent,
Upon the broken, crumbling battlement,
Upon the breathless starlit air,
‘Upon the star that marks the hidden pole;
Fix every wandering thought upon
That quarter where all thought is done:
Who can distinguish darkness from the soul
William Butler Yeats

Italy

Stairs are climbed step by step.
– Turkish Proverb

Kashmir

Children’s stories tell tales of boys and girls discovering treasures upstairs in the attic and fearing what is downstairs in the basement.

Afghanistan

Faith is taking the first step even when
you don’t see the whole staircase.

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Burma

Morocco

Man, unlike anything organic or inorganic in the universe,
grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his concepts,
emerges ahead of his accomplishments.
– John Steinbeck

Jodhpur, India

My soul can find no staircase to Heaven unless it be
through Earth’s loveliness.
– Michelangelo

Italy

Mt. Popa, Burma
The stairway climbs a 300-foot lava plug crowned by Buddhist temples.

Serbia

Mother to Son
Well, Son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor —
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now —
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
– Langston Hughes

New York, September 12, 2001

New York

Halfway down the stairs
is a stair
where i sit.
there isn’t any
other stair
quite like
it.
i’m not at the bottom,
i’m not at the top;
so this is the stair
where
I always
stop.

Halfway up the stairs
Isn’t up
And it isn’t down.
It isn’t in the nursery,
It isn’t in town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head.
It isn’t really
Anywhere!
It’s somewhere else
Instead!

Artists have been depicting the special bond between mothers and their children for hundreds of years.

Rybinsk, Russia

Relationships can be difficult to describe, and sometimes an image tells the story better than words. One of the most powerful and unforgettable photos depicting a mother and her children in the history of photography is Dorothea Lange’s photograph of a destitute mother and her children taken in 1936.

Dorothea Lange said in an interview about the picture, “She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed. She had just sold the tires from her car to buy food. There she sat in that lean-to tent with her children huddled around her, and seemed to know that my pictures might help her, and so she helped me.”

Generations: A Family Affair

It is not until much later, as the skin sags and
the heart weakens,

In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit.
